After nine months, suddenly a contraction. It has begun! The first stage of labour begins with regular uterine contractions and the rupture of the membranes or ‘water breaking’. This can be a very exciting time – but it can also last anywhere from a few hours to days! A quick birth is often the experience most moms wish for (the anticipation of the new baby is great), yet the body has its own inner clock, and each woman is different. There are many stories of spicy food bringing on labour… but the best plan is often to follow the timeline nature has scheduled. Having said this, there are natural ways to promote labour in a gentle manner. One of these is water!
While some women plan a water birth, in which they actually give birth in a water bath, others find that relaxing in water during the earlier stages of labour helps with contractions and natural relief of labour pains, while promoting a faster birth. In fact, many midwives assisting in a natural birth will suggest spending at least some time relaxing in water – whether that is during the earlier stages of labour or during the last stage when the baby is born. Warm water is well known to relax and assist women during labour. Spending time in the bath during the first stages of labour is very relaxing and helps to soothe the mother and promote contractions. Aromatherapy oils added to the bathwater can be of great benefit and can help to relax as well as to stimulate contractions and therefore speed up the process naturally.
Michele Carelse, Clinical Psychologist, founder of Feelgood Health and formulator of Tranquil Birthbath, has this to say:
“All three of my children were born at home with the help of a midwife. While in labour with my second child, the midwife suggested I spend some time in a warm and fragrant bath. With her and my husband sitting on the bathroom floor, I was definitely the one having the best time – even drifting off to a dreamy sleep in-between contractions! The combination of the warm water and the oils certainly made for shorter and more relaxed labour and we were all, including the midwife, astonished to find that I was ready to deliver after only two hours – especially as my first child took more than 20 hours to arrive!” – Michele Carelse, Clinical Psychologist
Aromatherapy involves the use of therapeutic grade extracts of essential oils of plants to effect healing and to facilitate both emotional and physical health. In the case of aromatherapy, the oils are not swallowed. Rather the mediums of massage, warm baths and oil burners are used to release the oils into the air and to introduce them to the skin. The inhaled vapours allow the particles to enter the system and to produce a therapeutic effect. It is also well known that the area in the brain that processes smell is very close to the area which plays a large part in the experience of emotions. For this reason, the smells around us can deeply influence our emotions as well as our sense of well-being. Aromatherapy applies this knowledge and uses the distinct aromas of nature’s diverse botanical treasures to great therapeutic effect. All the ingredients found in BabyNature’s aromatherapy bath, massage and oil burner oils contain therapeutic grade extracts of specially selected plants and are never diluted with synthetic ingredients.
This therapeutic bath oil contains the following pure essential aromatherapy oils of Clary Sage, Clove, Jasmine and Neroli in a natural vegetable carrier oil.
- Clary Sage oil strengthens the respiratory and muscular systems in labour while facilitating regular, effective contractions to speed up the process. This essential oil also relieves pain and tension.
- Neroli oil brightens the spirit and brings clarity to the mind. This essential oil improves circulation throughout the body and reduces fear and anxiety.
- Jasmine oil dulls uterine pain, strengthens contractions during labour and promotes healthy production of breast-milk.
- Clove oil stimulates contractions, facilitating the birth process. This oil is useful for its antiseptic and pain-relieving properties and will also prevent nausea and vomiting, sometimes experienced during labour.
Did you know? Up to 60% of the products we use on our skin are absorbed into our circulatory system. Sodium laurel sulfate (SLS) forms carcinogenic nitrogen compounds when combined with specific ingredients, while parabens and petrochemicals can also cause harm – definitely not what you want during pregnancy and labour – or at any other time! Our 100% natural topical products are safer, healthier alternatives as they contain absolutely no parabens, sodium laurel sulfate or harmful petrochemicals.

‘Tranquil BirthBath and Heavenly Labour Massage Oil made my childbirth experience a lot more manageable than what I could have imagined and compared to the stories I have heard from friends. I took a long, relaxing bath during the first stage of my labour with Tranquil BirthBath which was just divine and I felt very relaxed and positive. Would you believe that I even fell asleep in the bath during labour! The Massage Oil was lovely too- you can’t imagine how much having my husband massage my lower back relieved the labour pains. Thank you for helping me to have a beautiful, natural childbirth experience!’ – Sherrie
How do I use Tranquil BirthBath?
Directions: Pour half to one capful under hot running water and relax in the bath during labour for as long as is desired. The birth assistant should make sure that the water does not become cold and should top up with more hot water and a few drops of Tranquil BirthBath from time to time. Examinations by the midwife to check dilation and the progress of labour may safely be performed while in the bath. Keep warm towels and soft, loose clothing ready for when the mother is ready to get out of the bath to begin delivery of the baby. (If the mother is planning to actually give birth underwater, a new tub of water should be prepared as essential oils are too strong for newborn babies)
NOTE: We also highly recommend our Heavenly Labour Massage Oil during labour to help with back pains, assist contractions and to relax and soothe the mother during natural childbirth.
Some questions and answers
What about water births?
Delivering in water – usually a birthing pool or bath – is gaining in popularity and has many advantages for both mother and baby. Water births offer greater comfort and mobility for the mother and facilitate efficient contractions while at the same time reducing pain. Warm water can reduce the need for drugs – both those for pain and drugs used to stimulate contractions artificially. Often, simply getting into the tub will result in dramatic and rapid progress to full dilation within an hour or two. Labouring and delivering in water helps the mother to relax, regulates blood pressure and makes for a generally more gentle birth experience. As Tranquil Aromatic BirthBath is formulated for helping the mother during the earlier stages of labour, it is not recommended for adding to a water bath that is to be used for the actual delivery. This is because new babies have very sensitive skin and should not be exposed to essential oils at such an early stage. If you are planning to give birth underwater, you would want to run a fresh tub of water before your baby begins to ‘crown’.
Is this bath oil safe to use in labour?
Absolutely! The therapeutic oils used in Tranquil BirthBath are chosen for their safety and effectiveness during the early stages of labour.

No – as the oils chosen for Tranquil BirthBath are known to stimulate contractions, this bath oil is not recommended during pregnancy and is to be used during the early stages of labour only.
