What To Do With Kids On The Garden Route

What To Do With Kids On The Garden Route - 4aKid

There are plenty of fun activities for the whole family to do when you are traveling through the spectacular Garden Route.

There is so much that we decided to mention those that are a bit different in that it's not something you would see every day or that is just really too fun to leave out. That being said, there are so many things to see that you can really plan a whole holiday around it! Here are some of our picks.

Tsitsikamma Zip Line Canopy Tour

This is the first zip line canopy tour of it's kind in Africa. Slide from one platform to the other, 30 meters above the Tsitsikamma indigenous forest and enjoy the beautiful scenery. You can learn all about the local flora and birdlife, while the guides show you around the giant Outeniqua Yellowwood trees. The tour includes guides, safety gear, a bottle of water as well as a certificate to show friends and family of your adventure. Regrettably this is not suitable for children under 5, expecting mothers or people over the weight limit of 130kg due to the safety risks. There is also a 600 meter hike after the tour has ended.

Wild Cat Experience

Learning about wildlife conservation on a 1 hour guided tour is always fun! You can see many wild cats of South Africa up-close, including lions, cheetahs, leopards, etc. Other animals like meerkats, storks and penguins are also part of the experience. You can take close range photos of these remarkable animals from the raised walkway. Unfortunately there is no food and drink available on the premises, so be sure to grab a bite before you go.

Kaaimans Adventures

Set in a privately owned nature reserve is the amazing Kaaimans Adventures. You can do so many fun activities including kayaking, guided hikes, historic ox wagon trail walks, picnics, kloofing, abseil and live music. They also have a bar and kitchen that you can get something to eat from after a long adventurous day.

Knysna Elephant Park

This is the first sanctuary in South Africa to care for and house orphaned African elephants. There you can experience and interact with the largest matriarchal elephant herd in the country! They offer early morning and late afternoon experiences by reservation only and you can also enjoy their restaurant and curio shop while the kids have fun on the playground. They also offer accommodation at their 4-star Elephant Nature Lodge.

Bartolomeu Dias Museum

Also known previously as the Post Tree Museum before being renamed in 1988, this museum is located near the beach, shops,  restaurants and tourist information centre. You can see exhibits and attractions like the famous 500 year old Post Office Tree, a life-size replica of the Dias Caravel, the Shell Museum & Aquarium and the Ethno-Botanical Garden among others.

Southern Comfort Quads

Although they don't allow kids under 13 years of age to drive alone on the quads, younger kids can get lifted by their parents on the guided trails. These trails are challenging but are very fun! They also have a tuck shop where they serve coffee, tea, cold drinks, snacks and muffins. This is a fun and adrenaline filled activity for the adventurous family to enjoy!
