Food Cravings When Pregnant

A woman's taste preferences can change throughout pregnancy. Food cravings usually start to emerge at the end of the first trimester but can also be an indication of pregnancy. These cravings are usually caused by many factors such as hormones, a need for comfort, altering nutritional needs or even a change in senses.

While some pregnant women may have a sudden urge to eat a particular food or dish, others may suddenly repel foods they generally enjoy eating. The most important thing is to eat a healthy balanced diet exercising moderation towards those unhealthy cravings.

Most common pregnancy cravings:

It can be sweet, salty, spicy or even sour. You name it...from chocolate to pickles or pickles with chocolate shavings! 

Here is a list of the most common food cravings:

  • Ice
  • Chocolate
  • Spicy food
  • Potato chips
  • Fruit
  • Lemon
  • Ice cream
  • Red meat
  • Vinegar
  • Dairy

Pregnant women have also known to cave non-edible food items such a s grass, rocks, dirt, or chalk. This is known as "pica" and may indicate an iron deficiency. Medical attention should be sought as this may be dangerous to mom and baby. 

Tips for managing unhealthy food cravings when pregnant:

  • Eat regular, healthy meals
  • Eat healthy snacks between meals.
  • Low GI foods keep you full for longer
  • Keep to a healthy sleeping routine

Nutrients to consider when pregnant:

  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Protein
  • Folic Acid

Eating healthy with a side serving of cravings is normal as long as you are feeling good and strong and providing your little one with the nutrients they need.
