ENJOY THE BEAUTY OF BALLET UP CLOSE AS THE SLEEPING BEAUTY DANCES ONTO STER-KINEKOR SCREENS

Ballet fans across the country will soon have the opportunity to appreciate the technique, dexterity and mastery of ballet dancers up close and personal, when one of the world’s most beloved ballets, The Sleeping Beauty, releases in select Ster-Kinekor cinemas for a limited season, from 18 July.

For the very first time, admirers of this beautiful art form can enjoy this ballet up close, with a front-row seat for this unique cinema experience! Rudolf Nureyev, choreographer and producer of the Paris Opera’s beloved The Sleeping Beauty ballet film, considered this ballet to be the perfect completion of “symphonic dance”. This splendid production, danced to Tchaikovsky's luminous score, offers an enchanting spectacle and remains a jewel of the classical repertoire.

Nureyev's staging brings a psychological nuance and dramatic detail to the classic tale, with every gesture and movement designed to convey meaning. The Paris Opera Ballet's The Sleeping Beauty is a production that blends tradition with innovation, offering a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience.

Nureyev's version is a production that emphasises the male roles, particularly that of the Prince, giving them more prominence and depth. The ballet, which tells the story of Princess Aurora and Prince Désiré, is known for its spectacular enchantment and the sparkling charm of Tchaikovsky's music. It is considered to be a significant work in the classical repertoire and is often described as the "ballet of ballets".

At her christening, Princess Aurora is granted all perfections and qualities by her godmothers. The old Fairy Carabosse, who was forgotten as guest to the festivities, casts a terrible spell: Aurore will prick her finger with a spindle and die. Fortunately, the Lilac Fairy lessens the curse. Instead of dying, the Princess will fall into a long, deep sleep that will last a hundred years.
