If your kid is tired and cranky in the morning, it might be because the #1 Thing Destroying Your Kid’s Sleep is technology!
Almost 70 percent of kids have at least one tech device in their bedroom, and kids who leave a device on at night sleepless, losing an average of one hour of sleep per night, according to a study by the National Sleep Foundation.
Jill Creighton, MD, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital in Stony Brook, New York, tells Rodale News that it is a parent’s responsibility to set the tone and enforce the rules when it comes to using technology. Parents need to lead by example, so the first step is to be aware of how often you are checking your own phone and other devices in the evenings. By backing off of obsessive interest in your own tech, you’ll establish more credibility in setting a “devices off” rule for the kids, she adds. And as a result, you’ll all have more relaxing evenings and sleep better and longer.
