HEALTHY DOG BISCUIT RECIPE

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups old-fashioned oats (gluten-free)
  • 1 cup fresh parsley, loosely packed and finely chopped
  • 1 medium carrot, peeled and grated
  • 1 ripe banana, peeled
  • 1 large egg, beaten (see tip below for dogs with allergies to chicken products)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil, melted (unrefined, extra-virgin is best)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F.
  2. Add oats to a blender or food processor and pulse until a flour-like consistency.
  3. Combine in a medium bowl, flour, carrots, and parsley.
  4. In a small bowl mash the banana with a fork and mix in egg and coconut oil.
  5. Combine banana and flour mixtures and knead until moistened.
  6. Turn dough onto a surface lightly dusted with flour. Use your hands and shape dough into a 1/4-inch thick circle.
  7. Use small to medium doggie cutter, cut out treats and place on a parchment-lined cookie sheet or non-stick cookie sheet. Bake 30-35 minutes.

Note: The longer the treats are baked the more crunchy they will be. Allow cooling completely before storing in an airtight container. Makes approximately 40 (1-inch) treats or 24 (2-inch) treats.

Tip: For dogs with allergies to chicken products, substitute 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce for one large egg.

Pumpkin Dog Biscuits Recipe for Sensitive Stomachs

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg (if your dog is allergic to eggs, just leave this out)
  • 2/3 cup pureed pumpkin
  • 5 tablespoons flaxseed oil or olive oil
  • 2 cups brown rice flour
  • 1/3 cup cold water

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the egg. Then add the pureed pumpkin. If you’re purchasing canned pumpkin, DO NOT buy pumpkin pie filling. It is filled with added sugars and artificial ingredients that your dog does not need. Also, try to get organic pumpkin if possible.
  3. Add the flaxseed oil and brown rice flour and stir until the mixture forms a dough. You’ll notice the dough is very dry.
  4. Add the water slowly to the mixture. You’ll see that the dough quickly absorbs the water. If you notice the dough becoming sticky, stop adding water. Once the dough is smooth, you can roll it onto a floured surface.
  5. As I explain above, you’ll want to roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thick. Roll it as evenly as possible so the biscuits will all cook thoroughly. If you have thick spots and thin spots, you’ll have biscuits that are over-cooked and some that are under-cooked.
