Fresh from the pan and served warm, they're ideal with butter, jam, honey or even a drizzle of golden syrup. Once you make them from scratch, you'll wonder why you didn't try sooner.

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Resting Time: 1 hour
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Makes: 10-12 crumpets

Ingredients

  • 300g cake flour
  • 7g instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 250ml warm milk
  • 125ml warm water
  • ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 tablespoon warm water
  • Butter or oil for cooking

Method

Step 1

Place the flour, yeast, sugar and salt into a large bowl.

Add the warm milk and warm water.

Step 2

Cover the bowl with a clean tea towel.

Leave in a warm place for 1 hour until bubbly and doubled in size.

Mix the bicarbonate of soda with 1 tablespoon warm water.

Stir it into the batter.

The mixture should be thick but pourable.

Step 4

Lightly grease a non-stick frying pan and crumpet rings if using.

Heat over medium-low heat.

Step 5

Pour batter into the rings, filling each about halfway.

Cook for 5 to 7 minutes until bubbles form across the surface and the tops begin to set.

Step 6

Remove the rings carefully.

Flip the crumpets and cook for another minute until lightly golden.

Step 7

Serve warm with your favourite toppings.

Topping Ideas

  • Butter and strawberry jam
  • Honey and cinnamon
  • Golden syrup
  • Peanut butter
  • Cream cheese and berry compote
  • Nutella and sliced banana

Tips

  • Cook slowly over medium-low heat for the best texture.
  • If the batter is too thick, add a splash of warm water.
  • Crumpet rings help create a traditional shape but aren't essential.
  • Freeze leftovers and toast when needed.

Conclusion

Homemade crumpets are simple to make and bring a little extra comfort to cold winter mornings. Soft, fluffy and perfect for soaking up melted butter, they're a delicious breakfast treat the whole family will love.
